چکیده
Abstract We propose a robust and efficient augmented Lagrangian-type preconditioner for solving linearizations of the Oseen–Frank model arising in nematic cholesteric liquid crystals. By applying Lagrangian method, Schur complement director block can be better approximated by weighted mass matrix Lagrange multiplier, at cost making harder to solve. In order solve block, we develop multigrid algorithm which includes an additive Schwarz relaxation that captures pointwise version kernel semi-definite term. Furthermore, prove term improves discrete enforcement unit-length constraint. Numerical experiments verify efficiency its robustness with respect problem-related parameters (Frank constants pitch) mesh size.

Ordering of Glass Rods in Nematic and Cholesteric Liquid Crystals
The orientational assembly of glass rods (3 x ~15 μm) in nematic, twisted nematic, and cholesteric liquid crystal cells was observed and quantified with optical microscopy. At this size, the rods were affected strongly by gravity and sedimented to the bottom of the cells. Temporal visualization of the sedimentation process (induced by flipping the cell over) shed insight into the effect the liq...
متن کاملTorsional Shear Flow of Nematic and Cholesteric Liquid Crystals Part I: Nematic Phase
The present work is an extension of a previously published work [1] on studying simple shear flow of liquid crystals. With new measuring equipment (Sect. 2), the torsional shear flow method (Sect. 2) is now used to study the influence of three experimental parameters on simple shear flow. These parameters are the temperature T, the electric voltage U and the eigentwist to, which can be induced ...
متن کاملSubmillisecond-response nematic liquid crystals for augmented reality displays
We report a new nematic liquid crystal (LC) mixture with an ultra-low rotational viscosity (γ1 = 53.4 mPas @ 35°C), relatively high birefringence (Δn ≈0.15), and moderate dielectric anisotropy (Δε = −2.80 @ 35°C). When employed in a liquid-crystal-on-silicon (LCoS) projector with RGB light-emitting diodes (LEDs), a sub-millisecond response time is obtained without the need for complicated overd...
متن کاملWetting of cholesteric liquid crystals.
We investigate theoretically the wetting properties of cholesteric liquid crystals at a planar substrate. If the properties of substrate and of the interface are such that the cholesteric layers are not distorted, the wetting properties are similar to those of a nematic liquid crystal. If, on the other hand, the anchoring conditions force the distortion of the liquid crystal layers the wetting ...
متن کاملA Study of Characteristic Times in the Field-Induced Nematic to Cholesteric Transition in Liquid Crystals
The relaxation from the field-induced nematic state to the cholesteric state of liquid crystals is investigated. By using an optical retro-reflection technique, we have isolated the orientation and pitch of cholesteric helices as a function of time for various surface treatments. We have found that the pitch relaxes to its minimum value in a matter of milliseconds, independent of surface treatm...
